Our History

In September 2026, QC Bike moved to a new home at 803 Elm Street in downtown Manchester. The move marked an important step in our organization’s development, providing greater visibility, a more stable home for our Open Shop, and new opportunities to connect with the community.

We also hosted our fourth annual Tour of Manchester, continued our Earn-a-Bike/Be Active programs, and worked to strengthen the organization through strategic planning and capacity-building efforts.

In September 2024, we held our second annual Tour of Manchester with over 170 riders!

With the support of Elliot Health System and our other community partners, we were able to provide 225 Beech Street and Gossler Park fourth and fifth graders with Earn a Bike/ Be Active alternative sports packages.

Through our Open Shop,  we accepted 889 donated bicycles that helped fuel our cache of used parts for affordable repairs, provided raw stock for our various projects, and allowed us to share materials with other groups doing bike related work both nearby and abroad!

We closed out the year having put helped over 70 formerly-incarcerated, Manchester residents acquire bicycles to get to work

In May 2022, we once again delivered Earn-a-Bikes to Gossler Park and Beech Street Schools with the support of Elliot Health Systems and Manchester Health Department

In the summer of 2022, we hired Hannah Aube (Bookkeeping), Rene Barcomb (Mechanic Apprentice), Marie Caron (Volunteer Coordinator), Susan Nallan (Business Administration), and Wes Wiggins (Lead Mechanic).

We closed out the year having received nearly 1000 donated bicycles!

In January 2021, we were awarded funding to provide the City of Manchester with 8 Dero Fixit Stations, to take the Do-It-Together bike repair ethos beyond the walls of our shop.

In May 2021, we hired our Communications and Support Managers to help us maximize our community impact and our reach.

We reopened Open Shop for emergency repairs, donations, and bike shopping in July 2021.

In January 2020, we welcomed 6 new members to our Board of Directors who are passionate about our work and our mission.

In mid March 2020, we closed operations in response to the COVID-19 situation.

We reopened in April 2020 after reimagining our operations: hiring a strong mechanic and conducting operations via appointment.

In August 2020, we were able to hire our apprentice mechanic.

In May 2019, we delivered 107 bike packages to Beech Street and Gossler Park Elementary schools, the culmination of the fourth year of QC Bike & Manchester Health Department’s Earn-A-Bike program.

In June 2019, we successfully began a Strategic Planning process, generously funded by The Bean Foundation, with the consultation of Thrive.

In September 2019, we were granted our 501(c)(3) status by the IRS.

In April 2018, we incorporated as a New Hampshire non-profit. If you are passionate about our mission and have an interest in joining our Board of Directors, we would love to hear from you.

In June 2018, we successfully completed Open Shop, funded by the City of Manchester – Community Improvement Program, providing affordable bicycle repair services to 160 beneficiaries from Manchester’s neediest neighborhoods.

In July 2018, we moved to our current location, 35 Elm St. With more workspace and main street frontage, we anticipate exciting days ahead.

In June 2017, we successfully completed a 9 participant Build-a-Bike program, funded by the City of Manchester -Community Improvement Program.

In September 2017, we began a partnership with the Sununu Youth Services Center to provide a 6-8 session, hands-on Build-A-Bike program. In that time 10 participants have successfully completed the program, taking the bike they had built, a set of lights, a lock, and a helmet with them, upon their release.

In March 2015, we developed plans for regular, open shop hours and formally organized to accept bike donations and conduct sales. Since May 2015, we have been open every Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 PM, adding more shop time whenever we could. Over that period, we have served nearly 800 individuals with repairs ranging from flat tires to frozen bottom brackets.

Until May 2015, we operated solely on small, individual donations. Since that time, we have received grant funding from Queen City Rotary, Kiwanis Club of Manchester, New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, & The Bean Foundation.

In June 2015, we implemented a pricing plan for the use of shop/equipment and the sale of used parts and bicycles. Since that time, we have taken in over 800 bicycles and many of those are now in use in our community.

We are very grateful to have received significant bike donations from individuals thanks to local press coverage and word of mouth in the community. Since July 2015, the Manchester Police Department now donates all bikes found, or confiscated, to QC Bike Collective, instead of sending them to auction out of state.

QC Bikes

We first organized in July 2014 and held two community clinics over six months. These repair clinics indicated interest in, and the need for, affordable bike services within our community.  Our strong partnership with NeighborWorks of Southern NH (our former fiscal agent; a non-profit housing and community development agency) allowed us the opportunity to set up shop in the heart of the Queen City, and accept tax-deductible donations in the form of bicycles, parts, and cash.
